Antoine Thurel, 56, sets himself on fire on the steps of the Massachusetts State House.

August 30, 1987

A Haitian immigrant and cab driver who lived at 465 Norfolk Street, Thurel commits suicide to protest U.S. support for the Haitian military and junta. A memorial service for him is held at the State Temple Church of God in Christ, followed by a march by members of the Boston Haitian community to Forest Hills Cemetery on September 5, 1987.
